Q&A

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT PERMANENT COSMETICS

IS IT SAFE?
I am a qualified nurse and have additionally undertaken comprehensive specialised training which enables me to carry out these procedures both safely and skilfully. All procedures are performed with the most advanced digital equipment and the pigment range is of medical grade. Needles are single use along with all other disposable equipment. All work takes place in a sanitary and clinical environment which is disinfected between clients.

DOES IT HURT?
Trauma to the skin is minimised due to the precision of the digital equipment used. A local anaesthetic is applied before the procedure. Once treatment is underway further anaesthetic is applied throughout to minimise discomfort.

WHAT ABOUT ALLERGIC REACTIONS OR INFECTION?
A sensitivity test is carried out prior to treatment although a reaction is extremely unlikely. There is a minimal risk of infection as strict infection control precautions are taken. I wear a mask, gloves and apron whilst working and needles are single use and sterile.
Aftercare instructions and a healing balm are given to clients to help prevent infection developing during aftercare.

WHAT WILL I LOOK LIKE AFTER TREATMENT?
Initially the colour will look darker and there may be a slight pinkness to the skin as well as some mild swelling . Colour will soften over the next 7-10 days but is not too noticeable, so you will be able to return to work the following day. Clients having lip treatments will develop more noticeable swelling and the colour will be considerably darker for 2-3 days.

HOW IS COLOUR AND SHAPE DECIDED?
Colours are selected from a comprehensive palate taking into account your natural colouring and the look you would like to achieve. It is a good idea to wear your usual make-up so I can get an idea of what you like.I will then design the shape on your face with a make-up pencil using measuring callipers to ensure symmetry and balance. The client is involved in the design process throughout until the desired look is achieved.

WILL IT LOOK NATURAL?
The finished result will look soft and natural. I will advise on colours and shape which will improve your appearance without others being aware of your treatment.

HOW LONG WILL IT LAST?
The colour will fade gradually over time. A colour boost is recommended yearly to maintain the intensity. If however you choose not to do this it will last about 3-5 years. As the pigment remains permanently in the dermis it may not disappear completely.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT LINE
RELAXING INJECTIONS

IS IT SAFE?
Commonly known as “Botox” botulinum toxin is administered in very small doses into the facial muscles which lie quite superficially beneath the skin. It has been used for over 30 years as a cosmetic treatment and more than 50 years for many medical treatments including children with muscular dystophy. It has a very high safety profile when administered by trained medical professionals.

DOES IT HURT?
The injections are carried out using a very fine needle and only very small amounts are placed in each area. If a client is particularly sensitive or nervous then an anaesthetic cream can be applied to the area prior to treatment. This is not usually necessary.

WHAT ABOUT ALLERGIC REACTIONS OR INFECTION?
An allergic reaction is unlikely and would be a result of the protein present in the injecting solution rather than the botulinum toxic. Infection is incredibly unlikely and would only result in a spot like formation on one of the injection sites. Aftercare advice is given after treatment to avoid this.

WHAT WILL I LOOK LIKE AFTER THE TREATMENT?
The area treated will be slightly red and a little swollen around the injection sites. Bruising can occur but usually only at 1 or 2 injection areas, and present as a tiny bruise 1-3mm in diameter, easily covered with a dot of concealer. It is advisable not to apply make-up for 6 hours after treatment.

ANY SIDE EFFECTS?
There are many scare stories about drooping eyes and lop-sided eyebrows. This is not due to a side effect but poor injection technique by the practitioner. Some of these problems can be corrected with a follow up visit. In the worst case scenario the results will only last for 2-3 months and then wear off.

HOW LONG WILL IT LAST?
Treatment lasts 3-4 months initially before the body naturally repairs itself. However after regular treatment the muscles become weakened through lack of use. As the client gets used to not initiating the use of these muscles, even when the effects of the treatment have worn off, the muscles can remain less active.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT FILLERS

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BOTOX AND FILLERS?
Botox is used to relax facial muscles to prevent creasing of the skin through daily facial expression. Fillers are used to replace volume loss within the skin. Thereby lifting wrinkles from beneath and restoring volume to sagging areas of the face.

DOES IT HURT?
The product is placed into the skin using a needle and syringe so there is some discomfort. Anaesthetic cream is used prior to treatment to numb the area and reduce the sensation. Most clients treated say that it is not as bad as they had expected.Treatment of the lips is more painful as it is such a sensitive area. A dental block can be used to numb the lips completely. Alternatively some of the newer fillers contain local anaesthetic, reducing discomfort.

WHAT ABOUT ALLERGIC REACTIONS OR INFECTION?
I tend to use products that are made from hylauronic acid which is a substance found in all living cells and therefore has a very high safety profile. No sensitivity test patch is required for this reason and a reaction is highly unlikely. There is a minimal risk of infection but would more likely be due to poor aftercare, i.e: not keeping the infection sites clean for the first few hours.

IF I HAVE MY LIPS TREATED COULD I GET A “TROUT POUT”?
We have all seen photos of celebrities who have had a significant lip enhancement. This is most likely to be because they want to look like that and have purposefully chosen a volumous look. In some cases it is down to problems with a reaction to permanent filler, which is what happened to Leslie Ash. This is one of the reasons I choose to use non-permanent product which are naturally broken down by the body and do not carry these risks. Lip treatments can be as subtle or dramatic as the client chooses.

WHAT WILL I LOOK LIKE AFTER THE TREATMENT?
The procedure gives instant results which is very satisfying. There will be a little swelling and some mild redness which can be concealed before leaving the clinic. If you have chosen to have your lips treated the swelling is more dramatic and noticeable for 2-3 days. It is therefore best to make sure you have no social events for a few days after you book your appointment.

HOW LONG WILL IT LAST?
Usually around 9 months to a year but this varies from person to person. Factors such as age, lifestyle and where the treatment is placed can affect longevity. The good news is research has shown that filters stimulate collagen synthesis, regenerating the skin even after the filter is gone.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THREAD VEIN REMOVAL – MICROSCLERATHERAPY

WHAT IS THE TREATMENT?
Scleratherapy is used to treat thread veins on the legs. It involves injecting a solution into the vein using a fine needle. Despite other treatments being available, this is still considered to be the most effective. For the treatment to be effective it is important that there are no underlying varicose veins, otherwise the treatment will not work.

DOES IT HURT?
The needle used is very fine and so the insertion of the needle is not particularly painful. The scleratherapy drug injected does sting a little and may feel itchy afterwards.

WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE AFTERWARDS?
There is usually mild to moderate bruising in the treated areas and the veins will actually look worse for 4-6 weeks afterwards before they fade. You will also need to wear support stockings night and day for the first 72 hours and then during the day only for the next week.

ARE THERE ANY RISKS ASSOCIATED WITH THE TREATMENT?
As with any injectable treatment there is always a slight risk of infection. With regards to the actual treatment there is a possibility that some of the veins treated may not respond and there is a slight risk of mild pigmentation to the areas treated.

IS THE TREATMENT PERMANENT?
The results from treatment are permanent, although it is likely that more veins will form in the future and so it is advisable that support stockings are worn in the future. Further treatment can keep symptoms under control.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT CHEMICAL PEELS

WHAT ARE THEY FOR?
There are peels for all types of skin conditions from acne scarring, pigmentation and skin rejuvenation. There are various acids used for different results. Some peels are deep and can provide dramatic results but require sometime out from social activity to recover. Other peels are very mild and a course is prescribed to get optimal results but allows you to continue life as normal.

ARE THEY SAFE?
The peels that I choose to use are mild to medium depth which means that there are very few problems associated with the treatment.

WHAT WILL I LOOK LIKE AFTER THE TREATMENT?
The glycolic peels will leave your skin looking immediately brighter and fresher with a pinkish glow that will calm down over 30 minutes. These are used for maintainance and are appropriate for everybody who wants to look after their skin. The deeper peels that are used to treat problematic skin will leave the skin feeling warm and you will look red. Over the next few days the upper layers ofthe skin may shed and the skin will feel tight and dry for about a week. This can be covered with make-up and you can continue with life as usual, but the skin will look quite dry.

DOES IT HURT?
The mild peels just feel tingly but not uncomfortable. The deeper peels will feel very hot when they are applied but are removed after 1-2 minutes. There is immediate relief on removal but the skin will feel hot. A hand-held fan is used for client comfort.

WILL I HAVE TO DO ANYTHING SPECIAL AFTERWARDS?
You will need to use a very emollient and hydrating cream as the skin will feel very tight and dry if you have had a treatment peel. The glycolic peels will leave your skin feeling fresher and will probably require less moisturiser. For all peels it is essential that an SPF 30 is used.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT DERMAROLLER

WHAT IS THE TREATMENT?
Dermaroller is similar to a deeper chemical peel in the way in which it works. It is a small rolling device with small needles of varying depth that is rolled over the treatment area. The needles penetrate the deeper dermal layers of the skin. This signals the skin that it has been injured which kick-starts the natural healing process. The skin then starts producing more collagen, elastyn and fibroblast, encouraging the skin to act younger, looking plumper, brighter and smoother.

DOES IT HURT?
An anaesthetic cream is applied to the treatment area and allowed to work for 20 minutes. The dermaroller is then applied to the skin and rolled in several different directions. It is mildly uncomfortable and will leave the skin feeling hot. A treatment serum is then applied and this penetrates through the holes that have been made to the active layers of the skin. There may be some tingling sensation depending on what the active ingredients are.

WHAT AREAS CAN BE TREATED?
The face can be treated for many conditions. Acne, sun damage, pigmentation, rejuvenation and scarring. This is also an effective treatment for stretch marks on the abdomen and thighs, gradually fading them and improving the skin.

WHAT WILL I LOOK LIKE AFTER TREATMENT?
The skin will look red and swollen immediately after treatment and for a few hours after-wards. If the eye area is treated there is likely to be some bruising as the skin is very thin. By the following morning, the skin will have calmed down and make-up can be applied. There is less recovery time with this treatment than with a deeper chemical peel.
